The WRC is in Australia this weekend!

Digital ONE are doing a pretty decent wrap up each night.

So far it’s been a good rally for Ford after Day 1. Both Miko and Latvala are ahead of Loeb. Hopefully they can hang on until the end of the rally - but there are sure to be a few upsets between here and there.

Talking about upsets - one of the stages was canceled. Not for any good and sensible reason - but because there were Greenies in the bushes rolling rocks onto the stage!

Apparently they were worried about the local wildlife - and were pissed off because an independent inquiry had told them they were stupid and the wildlife would hardly be affected. So they rolled stones and threw branches onto the track to try and crash the rally cars. They also threw rocks at the first (and only) car on the stage - Miko. It was canceled before it caused any harm though. (http://au.sports.yahoo.com/motorsport/news/article/-/5914016/latvala-narrowly-leads-rally-australia)

Now - I won’t say that it makes me ashamed to be Australian - because I’m proud to be  - but it does make me ashamed to acknowledge that those hooligans are Aussies too. Stages in the Dakar (and the whole event) have been canceled due to safety concerns with groups of bandits and soldiers roaming around looking to take hostages. But unlike those African countries, our government’s not particularly unstable - it’s just our environmentalists who are.

Hopefully Miko and Latvala can hold off Loeb, and hopefully common sense (and the police) can hold off the Greenies.

Note - I know the photos are of previous years - Subaru aren't fielding a team this year - but there are a few privateers like Mads Ostberg who are flying the flag

Routers, 3D, and other stuff

It’s been a long and exhausting week - but this weekend has been great so far.

Friday night was a movie night at my place. Tom and Jim (2 of the regulars) weren’t able to make it, but Nick and Alistair came along - and even Klutz decided on the spur of the moment to make the trip from Launceston. Together with myself, Tim, and Zeke - my lounge room was nicely filled.

Heaps of fun watching some classics like Dr Horrible, Soldier, and the zombie spoof Shaun of the Dead.

Klutz crashed the night here - and on Saturday morning we headed into Devonport to check out the Cmax open day. They’ve just installed some new 3D stuff - and were doing a demo of 3D trailers to show it off. These glasses are a lot better than the old blue and red one I’ve used before. They even worked ok over the top of my new glasses.

3D movies are still just a gimic - but they are a watchable gimic. There were about 20 minutes of trailers, and we watched them twice. No headaches or eye strain or anything - so should be able to sit through a feature.

Afterwards we headed up to Nerd Central where Klutz invested in a comic, some American chocolate things, and some trading cards from the movie Dune. These were vintage cards from when the 1984 movie was released - so they warned him not to each the bubble gum that came with the cards (it’s as old as I am).

After that - we spent the rest of the day programming a Cisco router at my place.

Quite a while ago my 2nd Linksys router died. I’d borrowed an ADSL modem from work - and had been meaning to buy a new one. In the mean time I’d been given a secondhand Cisco857W router. It had come from a business that didn’t need it anymore, and it wasn’t any use to them as it’s a true router. None of this sissy web-config pages. You need a roll-over cable to connect to the console on this baby! And once you're connected - you need to know how to program a Cisco router.

I haven’t touched cisco configs since uni - but thankfully Klutz has only just done that course - so he was able to get things cranking. The ADSL works fine - and so does the wireless (which took a little longer). Thanks heaps mate - I owe you a drink! On Monday I can finally return work’s modem.

So that was my weekend thus far. Pretty sweet!

For those who are interested and haven't seen it yet - here's a trailer for the new StarGate: Universe series that's coming in October.

Well - coming in October if you have to live in Yankyland - not sure when it will arrive down here. But there's always the intertubes....

By the way - the photo is the same as my new poster.

Brief Update

Greetings all!

Not much to report just now - so here are a few interesting things I found on the net:

British Wing Walker, 8, in dizzying record bid.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18/20090819/tod-british-wing-walker-8-in-dizzying-re-6058bda.html
Check out his father's name!
Imagine singing to him on his birthday!

P-plater's fatal attempt to save petrol
http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2009/08/25/93061_scalesofjustice.html
Not funny - but this guy in Hobart was killed  because he was trying to save petrol. Heard it on the radio and couldn't believe someone would do it. Even I know enough about cars to know it's insane. Not funny - but I wanted to share it.

Lego Strangeness
http://thesomewhatambitious.com/2009/08/how-to-win-friends-and-influence-people-with-lego/
And this rather odd and pointless video that combines Lego with 8-bit computer games. Love the pac-man part. Thanks to Turks for this one.

So that's it - hope things stop being so busy so I can get working on my new webserver again. Currently waiting for Turk to finish setting up the email server part.

For those of you who don't know - Devonport has a comic shop: Nerd Central.

I've been ordering a few magazines etc from the guy there, and have gotten talking to him a bit. He just had a couple of weeks off to go to America for a huge Comic Convention. And he brought me back a poster!

How cool is that? He actually brought me a StarGate Universe poster. I'm not even a very big customer!

I went over the road to Chickenfeed and bought a frame for it. Now hanging proudly on my wall.

And if you happen to be in Devonport - check out Nerd Central on the 4-ways!
