WRC Down Under

The WRC is in Australia this weekend!

Digital ONE are doing a pretty decent wrap up each night.

So far it’s been a good rally for Ford after Day 1. Both Miko and Latvala are ahead of Loeb. Hopefully they can hang on until the end of the rally - but there are sure to be a few upsets between here and there.

Talking about upsets - one of the stages was canceled. Not for any good and sensible reason - but because there were Greenies in the bushes rolling rocks onto the stage!

Apparently they were worried about the local wildlife - and were pissed off because an independent inquiry had told them they were stupid and the wildlife would hardly be affected. So they rolled stones and threw branches onto the track to try and crash the rally cars. They also threw rocks at the first (and only) car on the stage - Miko. Now - I won’t say that it makes me ashamed to be Australian - because I’m proud to be  - but it does make me ashamed to acknowledge that those hooligans are Aussies too. Stages in the Dakar (and the whole event) have been canceled due to safety concerns with groups of bandits and soldiers roaming around looking to take hostages. But unlike those African countries, our government’s not particularly unstable - it’s just our environmentalists who are.

Hopefully Miko and Latvala can hold off Loeb, and hopefully common sense (and the police) can hold off the Greenies.

 
Note - I know the photos are of previous years - Subaru aren't fielding a team this year - but there are a few privateers like Mads Ostberg who are flying the flag

Trust me its much worse when your chosen field of study requires you to be in constant company with environmental extremists. Its hard balancing conservation and management of natural resources with human usage of the environment - personally, I try to understand both sides of the problem and form my own opinion, but there arent many others willing to be objective about it.

I can imagine one or two of the people I spent all day with today (I have been at a conference all day) would be quite happy to throw stones at rally cars.
