This morning I was rather over-tired after the 2 late nights this week - but things got worse when I tried to make my lunch before work.

My Freezer had gotten a stupid idea into it's head, and decided to open the door sometime during the night. So the stuff in the freezer had defrosted, while the freezer had sensed the raised temperature and worked overtime to try and cool things down again.

So when I got up, I had thawed food, but the drawers (its an upright freezer) had frozen solid to the sides of the freezer, so I couldnt open them to get anything out - including the bread rolls for lunch.

I had food that was partially frozen, some completely thawed, and ice around the edges.

So I sticky-taped the freezer shut (it wouldnt stay shut on its own) when I went to work, and Mum came through this evening to help me sort it all out.

So now I have a nicely de-iced freezer, and much better sorted food. Most of my meat had been in the other freezer, so I didnt have to throw out much either.

Thanks Mum!

Well – today was the Devonport Cup, so I had half the day off. So what did I do with my time off – well, something must be wrong with me, because I cleaned.

Yes, I cleaned – stop gagging, it actually happened.

You see, I’ve bought a number of computer games that were on special (normally ones I’d played in the past, but never had a legal copy). That’s all good – but I was running out of space on my shelves – so a clean out was in order.

I threw a lot of stuff away – which makes it even more unusual for me. I must be feeling ill.

I also finally took a decent look at my printer. I’ve had it for a while, but something went wrong during a rather nasty paper jam – and the printer head stopped working. Still haven’t worked out why.

But I have finally gotten a printer going – just a different one.

A while back Terreth (my pastor) was given a laser printer. But alas, his laptop didn’t have a parallel port, and the printer didn’t have usb (and wouldn’t even work with a USB to Parallel adaptor). So I set up a computer called Kermit to share the printer for him, and that worked for a while. But Kermit died a couple of times, so Terreth bought himself a new printer.

He gave me the laser printer – which has been in my cupboard ever since.

Well – in the mean time I’d given away Kermit (and forgotten about it), but I did have another computer, called Gonzo, which I have pressed into service.

So now I use Gonzo here to share the laser printer for my home network. Gonzo is the little white box under my sub-woofer (yes Trojen, it’s your old Trinity server).

So thanks to Gonzo and Terreth, I now have a laser printer. It’s only black and white – but better than nothing.

And in other news, last night I worked from 8 to 11 at night. I remoted in to do some server maintenance. But sadly there is more to be done – so I’m at it again tonight. That’s what the laptop is for. So no-one can say I'm lazy when it comes to work, right....

So that’s what I’ve been up to the last few days. Surely you feel better for knowing that – don’t you?

Dakar 08 Canceled

This is not a good way to start the year...

There are only a few sporting events in a year that can get me excited. And chief among them in the Dakar Rally.

It's a gruelling rally from France (or Spain sometimes) to Dakar in Africa. Motorsport rarely gets better than watching these cars, bikes, and trucks charging through the African deserts.

But this year the winner has been declared early - terrorists.

Yes, the Dakar has been canceled this year.

Apparently the race directors have received terrorist threats against the rally - and had no choice but to cancel the event.

SBS has a news story about it here - http://programs.sbs.com.au/dakar/. The story includes a video that not only shows the officals reading the announcement, but also some of the competitors responces.

Unfourtuantly in this case, there are only losers. The big teams can survive ok - but it's the others that are the real losers.

The privateers have spent a great deal of time and money getting ready for the race - and a lot of that money will have come from sponsers. The sponsers have a condition that the person will start the rally. But with no rally to start - they might all have to pay the money back, money which has already been spent getting them that far.

The Dakar itself is also a loser. If it's been canceled this year, what will happen next year? The organizers have vowed to return next year - but will it be canceled again? Will the privateers risk the lose of money, or stay away?

The African countries will also lose out. The Dakar gives quite a financial boost as it goes through, but it also organizes a lot of charity work in the remote villages in the area it travels through. While this wont end with the lack of a race this year, if this is the doom of the Dakar as we know it, then it stands to reason that the charity work will be doomed too.

So it's a very sad way to start the year. I dont have any reason to rush home by 6 each night anymore. Sigh....

Best of 2007 Awards
jawapro
Fri 04/01/2008 09:31 PM

Well, another year has begun. To celebrate – I’m going to award some official HeadlessMoron.com awards to the best shows, movies, and games of 2007. Here goes!

 Best Sporting Event:
World Rally Championship
This year the WRC managed to beat the Dakar rally as being most exciting sporting event of the year. Who cares about football or cricket or anything like that – this is the only sport that is important – motorsport. A great battle between the two legends of the sport – with a disappointing finish (I’m a Gronholm fan – not a Loeb fan).

Best Reality TV Show:
The Amazing Race.
No other reality tv is worth watching – period.

Best Comedy TV Show:
I don’t watch much of this – so probably Thank God You’re Here.

Best Sci-Fi TV Show:
Stargate Atlantis. SG1 was canceled this year, which is awful, but at least Atlantis is still going strong.

Best Drama TV Show:
House. House is brilliant – if you don’t watch it – you should be shot. And then shot again for good measure.

Best Doco:
Rise of the Video Game. This show only just beats Monster Quest and Lost Worlds. Rise of the Video Game delves into the history of the Computer Game, from its earliest days right up until the present. Very interesting.

Best Movie:
Serenity.
Ok – so this movie came out in 2005, but nothing has managed to top it so far.

Best Movie that came out in 2007:
Transformers
Ok – maybe there were ‘better’ movies than this one, but it’s my favorite, and it’s my awards – so stop complaining. Hot Fuzz is a very close 2nd (I got it on DVD).

Most Re-Watched Movie:
Transformers. Cinemas, DVD, and then showing DVD to various other people.

Best Game Of 2007
Ok – this is the big award. And HALO didn’t win it. As if it would. While I don’t mind Halo, it’s defiantly not what most people crack it up to be.
Instead, I award the prize to:
Command and Conquer III: Tiberium Wars.
This strategy game is brilliant. The story is a let-down, but the game is great – and the FMVs will always rule.

Biggest Surprise Hit for 2007
Portal (PC game).
This game only just qualifies, as I only played it a day or two before the end of the year – but it’s brilliant. Made by the people who made Half Life 2 (need I say more?) this is basically a puzzle game. But throw all other puzzle games away – Portal is the best this genre has ever seen.

Best Song for 2007
Still Alive – the Portal song.
Yep, this award doesn’t even go to a singer – it goes to a computer game. It’s a brilliant song. And don’t forget – the cake is a lie!

Best Artist/Band for 2007
Wedding Parties Anything
Ok – so they have been split up for years. Ok – so they aren’t producing new music. Who cares? This is the first year I’ve come across WPA, and if one band has made an impact on me this year, it’s these guys. They might not have claimed my number one spot of all time (still held by Redgum) but they defiantly deserve this one.

Best Album for 2007
Trophy Night – Wedding Parties Anything
This album is WPA’s Best-of, and is a brilliant way to get into their music. A fan of Redgum that I was talking to on the net suggested it, and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve bought a number of their other albums from eBay now, but as this has the ‘best’ of their music, it takes the award.

Best Book of 2007.
No award given.
I’m not saying that I haven’t read some great books this year – but I haven’t managed to read the latest Matthew Reilly book yet, and to give the award to anyone else would just be insane. Likewise, I can’t give the award to a book I haven’t read yet.

So there you have it – my ‘Best of 2007’ list.
What do you think deserved the awards?

Invasion of the Turkeybrains

Merry New Year everyone!

I haven’t updated in a few days – mainly because I’ve been otherwise entertained.

Martin (Turkeybrain) came up from Hobart for a few days. Officially I think the trip was to work on the YourChoice website (A project Church is doing) and celebrate New Years.

In practice, it was more about playing games, watching movies – and other awesome things like that.

We learnt some stuff too – in fact, Martin was surprised to learn that if you put a large block of ice in hot water, the ice melts – and the water doesn’t freeze. Exactly why he thought otherwise I’m not sure.

We played some CS and UT, and tried some TA, but it didn’t want to work. Martin even gave my Xbox a whirl (as evidenced in the photo) but decided he didn’t like it all that much.

We also played a lot of Air Hockey – which is especially relevant as I originally decided that I’d like to buy myself a table a little over a year ago after playing it in an arcade with none other than the Turkeybrain himself. So this was sort of like comming full circle.

And it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention Portal.

Martin had bought himself the Valve Value Pack or something along that line, which came with a mass of great games like CS, HL2, etc. It also came with a game called Portal – which is mostly a puzzle solving game – but was an insane amount of fun.

The song at the end is brilliant too – and currently stuck in my head.

If you have a half-way decent sort of computer – I completely recommend Portal. It’s not overly long – but it’s entirely brilliant.

Oh – and the cake is a lie!
