Christmas UpdatejawaproWed 26/12/2007 10:12 PM
Well, Merry Christmas everyone!
I had a great break. We went down south to my Dad’s side of the family, and spent a lot of time sleeping, and a fair amount celebrating Christmas, eating too much, and probably drinking too much too, and sleeping some more.
This is the first time that I’ve worked for a year straight, without any real breaks to speak of. I got the public holidays, and two half days, but that was it. And for someone who’s used to school holidays, that was somewhat of a change, so the chance to sleep was very welcome.
I got quite a nice collection of presents. My parents gave me a new phone, and a non-George George Foreman Grill. I’ll blog about the phone in a while, but for now I want to show you this fantastic thing from Mike (Oblivion). He decided that a Headless Moron like me needs a Headless Dog, so he made me one. Very cool Mike!
I also got a new wallet, because I’ve been using the previous one for about 10 years or longer, and it was looking very tatty. In fact, as I also had to buy a new watch (I broke the last one by walking into a laptop at work) it means that 3 of my 5 daily essentials have been replaced in a matter of days (phone, watch, and wallet). The 2 that haven’t are my keys and glasses.
Anyway, there was also some breaking news on the family front. One both sides of the family, Emma and I are the oldest Grandkids, but we’re not going to be responsible for the first Great-Grandkids. My cousin Daniel and his girlfriend Megan are pregnant.
Two of my cousins got a Wii (to share) for Christmas. So I can finally say I’ve played a Wii. I’m not about to rush out and trade in my Xbox, and defiantly not my PC, but I’ll admit it is fun at parties and the like. And my friends claim it is heaps of fun when you’re drunk.
My Grandparents got a new large screen TV for Christmas, and it’s been making me rather jealous since I saw it. I’d been thinking of upgrading my TV sometime, and this has only encouraged me. I’m still not in a huge rush though, my PC defiantly comes first in the upgrade priorities. That plus the Mount Isa trip might eat into my budget enough to put the TV dreams on hold.
When we got down there though, the TV wasn’t working. It had sound, but no picture on the tube (although it’s probably not a tube these days I guess). I don’t mean there was no signal, I mean there was no picture. You couldn’t even see the TV’s built in menu, so it was sort of stuffed.
After playing around for a while, Dad and I gave up, and shifted it to the other side of the room and put the old TV back (much smaller). We were about to box the TV up to send back to the shop, but I decided to plug it in and give it one last whirl – and guess what, it worked. Dad and I shifted it back, and it’s been working ever since. Hopefully it’ll keep going.
We came back to Exeter last night, and I spent today sorting myself out (after sleeping in some more) and made my way back to Devonport ready for work tomorrow.
Among other things, I’ve been preparing stuff ready for my Mount Isa to Tassie trip. It’s only a few weeks away now, scary…
Daniel (Trojen) is back in the state for Christmas, and organized a trip to the flicks to see AVP2. Good chance to catch up with everyone. Tom (Nifen) and his friend Sabrina came and had a go on my air hockey table before heading home.
Finally its getting some of the use it was designed for.
Turkey is planning to come up on the weekend, so it’ll get some more use then.
Speaking of Turkey….
When Daniel organized the movie trip, we all bagged him out a bit because he always runs late for the movies. The last time (Transformers) was especially bad because we’d agreed to meet an hour before the movie, and he was still didn’t arrive until 5 minutes after the movie started.
But this time Turkey rang me up as I was about to go out the door, and so it was me who was late. How embarrassing – and I didn’t manage to get to Supercheap to buy Dad’s car seats that were on special either. Bother…
I was still at my parents place in Exeter for lunch today, so I decided to defrost a small pie for lunch. Mum’s microwave has a ‘quick defrost’ option. I did it once, while I was doing stuff, and when it beeped I decided to put it in for another ‘quick defrost’. Normally I end up putting stuff in for 2 defrosts and one cooking session before I get rid of all the frozen bits (my microwave and the one at work are the same) but Mum’s must be a tad more powerful, because when I came back out I could smell smoke.
From the outside it looked fine, but the inside was completely charcoal. It looked like it had actually caught on fire within the pie, but I’m not sure about that. Needless to say, I had something else for lunch.
Anyway, thanks for reading all this. I know it was a longish post, but it’s been a busy couple of days.
I’ll leave you with a photo of a Hummer I came across as we drove back up from Hobart. I had to talk Mum into doing a U-turn so I could take the photo. And there is NO doctoring at all, that’s how long it was. Insane….
Hope you all had a good Christmas!

Merry ChristmasjawaproFri 21/12/2007 02:40 PM
Well, Christmas is just a few days away - and I'm going to be visiting family until then, so I'll wish you all a merry Christmas.
That said, if anyone starts insisting that we sing carols in the car, they'll live to regret it. Or maybe not, depending on my mood at the time.

Project Phaeton: Stage 1 CompletejawaproThu 20/12/2007 10:36 AM
Finally Project Phaeton has begun.
The first stage is complete - with a case arriving yesterday.
Unfourtuantly it's a fairly common case. It looks great, but alas, there are a few of them around now. Ah well, I'm not too fussed - I might think of a way to personalize it sometime.
Sorry for the short post - but I'm still rather tired. Didn't leave work until a quater to eight last night - we had some server issues I was helping to fix.
* The black case is the new one. The Green and Black one (facing the other direction) is an old case that I'm going to reuse sometime as well.

Not the only one who shops on ebay...jawaproMon 17/12/2007 09:57 PM
Just so you all know - I'm not the only one who buys a lot of stuff on ebay.
My Dad just bought himself a new car.
He bid the reserve, and won it for that - much to the disapointment of the seller.
So a trip to Hobart to pick it up, and he's got himself a car.
^ The red one is my Subaru.

Test Dude 14jawaproMon 17/12/2007 10:43 AM
Dont you hate it when you've forgotten something that was probably mildly important?
I was at work this morning, when my phone started farting (the noise it makes when sitting on a bench and vibrating).
It was an alarm I'd set. But how long ago, I have no idea.
The alarm message simply said "Test Dude 14".
Unfourtuantly the relevance of the message has completely escaped me. Who is Dude 14, and why do I have to test him?
I'm assuming it has something to do with a piece of computer code or a website or something - but I just cant remember what it's on about.
So unless I get a brainstorm or a memory jolt - Dude 14 is going to remain untested for now.
