Where have all the posts gone?jawaproTue 29/04/2008 06:27 PM
Strange things are afoot. And I dont just mean I have odd feet.
Last night sometime, my web hosts moved servers - and appear to have lost some stuff in the process.
I'd written a rather long and probably not terribly interesting post last night about my weekend and my internet woes and various other things. It's gone now - completely vanished from the database.
At least one person commented last night too (I get an email when that happens) - probably on the missing post. Either way - the comments have disapeared too.
I've got people working on it - to try and recover the missing pages of history - but sadly these things may have gone the way of the Dodo - never to be seen again.

I have the net - sort of.jawaproWed 23/04/2008 07:56 AM
Finally - the net is working at home. The net itself seems pretty stable and good.
Unfourtuantly something has gone wrong with my router (ADSL modem). It maintains it's connection to the net perfectly, but it's the ethernet (network) connection that's giving trouble.
Initially it had me thinking that all my cables were damaged or something - as it wouldnt connect to any computers. After leaving it plugged in for a while, it eventually connected.
But it keeps dropping the network connection. Windows is saying "A network cable is unplugged." every few seconds at the moment. I know it's not really unplugged - but the router is doing something stupid.
Maybe my trusty Linksys has had it's day. It was second hand when I got it.
I can browse the net like this for now - but I doubt I'd be able to play any games or anything else that needs a steady connection.

Photos of my new HousejawaproTue 22/04/2008 11:53 AM
Ok - you can stop complaining now. Here are the first 2 photos of my new house.
Above you can see the lounge-room. The photo looked a bit dark on the pc here at work - so I've had to lighten that one.
As you can see - Bob is chillin at near the window, watching the blank tv (sometimes I worry about him). There are also lots of posters and photos sitting on the floor, as they havent got any wires on the back to hang them yet.
And here's a photo of my kitchen. It's been redecorated fairly recently - and looks pretty nice and new.
There - happy now?
More photos will come when I have moved into other rooms properly.

Martin Leader LAN - April 08jawaproTue 22/04/2008 11:41 AM
After being post-poned once thanks to me having to move house (how inconvienient of me!) we finally got a LAN at John's.
Much as I love the large LANs like Axon and Nexus (sadly missed) there is something about small lans that the bigger ones cant replicate.
Sure - you might get a lot more people playing in a game at a larger LAN - but its not as much fun.
This was a good sized lan. We have about 9 people in most of the games - which is a really good size. Enough to be fun - but small enough to be even more fun.
In a LAN this size, even if you dont know some of the people when you start, you will get to know them pretty quickly. And its far more fun to knock someone you know off the road in Flatout than it is to do it to some random stranger.
And then there's the banter. At a large LAN you could be halfway across the hall from your team-mates - but in a small room, everyone can be talking. Either trying to plan strategies in shooters, or yelling in frustration when someone sneaks up behind them and knifes them in the back, or laughing thier heads off after side-swiping somone's car and seeing it slam into a tree.
Thanks guys - it was a great LAN.
NOTE: In the top picture on the bench, you will see the only sort of apple allowed at a Martian Leader LAN.
In the bottom picture, Xorg has gone home, and has been replaced by a collection of lego.

Ebay - Disaster or Brilliant Move?jawaproThu 17/04/2008 10:10 AM
Ok ok - so most of you are probably wanting to see photos of my new house. Well - sorry to disappoint, but you’re still waiting.
Why - well mainly because I’m still unpacking and can’t take good photos yet - all you’d see is piles of boxes. I’ve been pretty busy moving the last bit of stuff from my flat and trying to organize things here. To prove my point - tonight is the first time I’ve had a computer going here. And for those of you who know me - that’s pretty drastic.
The phone got put on today, so the net should follow it as soon as I can organize it. Then you can start to expect regular posts again (including photos).
Anyway - on with the topic of the day.
The great Ebay crisis. Or at least that’s what Today Tonight would have you believe.
You see - Ebay Australia has decided to change their policy. Currently if you sell something, you can choose how you accept payment. There are a few common types - bank deposit, paypal, money order, etc…
Well, starting sometime soonish, ebay is only going to allow paypal and cash-on-delivery.
Now - this has caused a huge amount of anger from a lot of people. Today Tonight ran a story tonight (I finally got my tv set up) basically painting it as a greedy move by ebay - and picking on the ebay representative’s explanation. Almost no mention of the positive side of the argument.
Prices might rise by a tiny amount to cope with the fees paypal charges (2% of the sale price), but personally - I’m all for the move.
I always prefer auctions that offer paypal. If they don’t - I’m less likely to buy from them.
Why?
Its easy - you don’t have to go and load up your internet banking site to do payment - paypal is all integrated.
Its instant. You don’t have to wait a few days for the banks to clear things.
You can pay any currency - it handles it (so I can pay for an auction listed in US$ or British pounds etc).
And best of all - if the item doesn’t turn up, you can contact ebay and they can refund the money (after trying to sort things out first). It works - Dad’s had to do it once.
I love paypal. So personally - I think this is a brilliant move.
I’d be happy to cop the extra 2% for all that.
Bring it on ebay - and Today Tonight’s report was a one-sided farce.
Note: I dont know who the guy in the photo is - it was just a google photo that seemed to fit.
