Ok - first up, let me just say that The Ark of Truth was good. Great even. But I wouldnt go so far as to say it was Brilliant.

You see - it was like a really good episode of Stargate, which is fantastic, but it wasnt a huge step up to a totally new level, which some people were hoping for considering the larger budget and things.

This isnt Serenity - but it's still a good movie. And finally wraps up the Ori storyline.

Although apparently if you look closely enough you can see the code that controls the Replicators - and it's Javascript! Just change internet browsers, and there's a pretty good chance all the Replicators will break down. Pity they never tried that.

Anyway - the reason for the picture and the title is that I'm working from home tonight. Just moving a virtual server to a new physical host. I had to go in to work as the last people were leaving to move a physical cable - but the rest could be done from home.

That's all done now - but unfourtuantly we've just discovered that our major server has died AGAIN. It did it a bit over a month ago, and we got it going after over 24 hours of work. This time we have a bit better idea - but it could still mean a long night for someone. So far they havent wanted my help - but I'm sitting besides the phone just in case.

You might notice the tiny laptop in the photo (its soo awesome and tiny) - that's because we cant connect personal computers to the work network, in case we introduce a virus or something, so we have to use work computers. Everyone's fighting over this laptop at work at the moment - it's really cool. It's a HP 2510p, and has a 12 inch widescreen display - which is rather trippy.

Anyway - let you know how the server recovery goes tomorrow.

Check this out!

Stargate SG1 might have finished as a series - but this is the first of their Movies!

There's another one in the works, and maybe more to come after that.

The movie (The Ark of Truth) only officially came out on the 11th, but I'd ordered mine before that, and it arrived today.

Really looking forward to it - but I'm going to wait until the weekend and watch it with Mum (also a Stargate nut).

Once more through the gate my friends!

Long Weekend

Tue 11/03/2008 07:46 PM

Well - don’t you just love Long Weekends? I do.

Saturday was the Axon LAN. Code-named 'Just add water', this was the first LAN for the year.

 Image

There was the usual collection of geeks (including a surprising number of girls) and computers etc.

 Image

We got some awesome gaming done. Dota, COD4, Savage, and Flatout 2 (as demonstrated by Klutz)

John (Martian_Leader) collected his $600 graphics card I’d ordered from ITestate for him. He borrowed my screw-driver (cause I’m always prepared for things like that) and installed it in his case (it only just fits). He then turned his computer on - and the power for the entire table died.

 Image

After someone reset the fuse, he had another go. (pictured as he was turning it on the 2nd time). It worked this time - but his computer power supply isn’t large enough to support such an intense card - so he’s going to have to wait until he gets a new PSU before he can make use of his $600 card.

Ah - the joys of being a geek.

On a personal note - this should be the last LAN for my trusty Jade’sFire. She’s been a good PC for a few years - but she’s showing her age now. (Jade’s Fire is the name of a space-ship, and like all ships, you talk about it as if it’s feminine).

 Image

By the next LAN, I should have Phaeton up and running. If I don’t, I think I’ll be pretty annoyed by then. Although, if my friends organize a small LAN during Easter, I might still have Jade’sFire - depends when Intel releases their new processor.

One of the truly annoying things about regular Axon LANs is the fact that they are Saturday night LANs.

Nexus used to be Friday night LANs. That meant it was hard to get there after work - but you could stay up all night and have Saturday to recover. On a Saturday night, I have to get home in decent time so I can get some sleep before Church.

Or that was the plan anyway - until I entered the DOTA competition, and my team started winning. I didn’t leave anywhere near as early as I’d planned to.

On the way home - it wasn’t exactly boring either.

As I drove into Exeter, I noticed some people pulled over on the side of the road (which is odd this early in the morning), and when I got to them I could see why. There was a car on fire around the corner.

It looked like it had been dumped and set ablaze.

I rang Tripple-0h and waited around for the fireys to arrive.

When they arrived it was rather boring, they didn’t even want to talk to me - just told me to stand back - how disappointing!.

I did manage a couple of hours of sleep before church, so I survived Sunday.

On Monday (which was also a holiday due to the Long Weekend) I checked out the Exeter Market for a while. As always, I hunted around the stalls of junk and toys, looking for odd collectibles that I could collect or resell.

After that, Dad and I spent a stupid amount of time trying to work out the crazy logic behind the wiring in my car, and adding some driving lights. We’d changed the headlights a while back - but it was still pretty dim, so these should help a lot.

 Image

I dont hate the way they look either.

We also worked on my new LAN crate - but more on that later.

I stayed in Exeter on Monday night, and drove through back to Devonport on Tuesday morning - but that wasn’t boring either.

I was stopped by some SES blokes, because a truck had lost it’s load on the Frankford highway. I had to hang around for 30 minutes or so while the crane moved things around.

 Image

Eventually we were allowed through, and I was able to find some phone signal to let work know I was running late.

So that was my weekend - how was yours?

C-Day

Wed 05/03/2008 11:10 PM

Although it might feel like the world should stop turning and let you grieve, it dosnt.

Things continue to happen.

And today was C-Day at work.

I'm not sure if C stands for Charles, or CEO, but either way....

Our new CEO had his first day in the Devonport Office (actually, his first day in either office). So we'd put some effort in earlier in the week (and some the week  before) and tidied the IT area up. In fact, as I wasnt there yesterday due to the funeral, it felt really odd going to work - cause it all looked different.

We met Charles breifly when he was doing his tour of the office. He seemed like a nice bloke - and said we didnt look like IT people. We look too normal apparently. I'm not sure if that should flatter me or offend me.

He also said we didnt need to wear ties to work anymore. I'm not entirely sure if he's joking or not. Our old CEO was pretty strict about that sort of thing apparently - so things could change with Charles in the big seat now.

As long as he dosnt decide to fire us all and out-source IT....

This is a difficult post to write. I'm not sure what to say that can even vaguely do it justice, but I don’t want to say nothing either.

Last weekend when we were in Hobart to celebrate Mum's birthday with Emma, we took the opportunity to visit Gran (which we normally did when we were in Hobart). Gran is my great-grandmother (my Dad's Father's Mother).

On Sunday (when we were there) we were especially pleased to see Gran active and full of life again. Over the last few years she has gone up and down, and often hasn’t had the energy to do much at all. But on Sunday she'd been going visiting around the nursing home, and was generally in the best spirits we'd seen her in for years.

Even when she was exhausted during her 'good for nothing' stages (her words, not ours) over the last few years, she was still very active mentally. She kept track of the goings-on in the lives of all her family, as well as a large number of other people – staff from the nursing homes, friends, and families of both. And that's not a small number to keep track of either.

But on Friday, we heard that Gran had gone into hospital. As we were almost in Hobart for the Church Camp anyway (half an hour north), we all headed into Hobart to the Royal to visit her. She was pretty exhausted and in pain, but was still keen to find out if there were any developments in my house purchase since last weekend, and asked Chris (who had also been at camp) about his mechanics course.

It was a bit of a shock to see her like this after the last weekend when she'd been so well - but it was still Gran. She may have been completely exhausted and in pain, but nothing else had changed.

We left her to get some rest, and went back to the camp. A few hours later we got a phone call to say she'd passed away.

We were all pretty devastated. It wasn’t really unexpected - but that doesn’t do much to prepare you. Especially not when you've been so close to someone for so long.

Thanks to our friends, we managed to make it through the rest of the camp.

On Tuesday we all went back to Hobart for the funeral. Work was really good about it, and let me take the day off.

As upsetting as funerals are at the time, they do help you, and you feel better afterwards.

I didn’t really know what to write in this post. I didn’t want to trivialize it, and I knew I couldn’t really do it justice. In a lot of ways it would have been easier to ignore it completely on this blog, and talk about my latest ebay purchase instead or something. But I didn’t want to ignore it either. I blog about all sorts of pointless things sometimes, and to ignore something like this because it's too hard would just be wrong.

We'll miss you Gran!
