Just a quick note to say that Oscar and I survived our trip to the West Coast with Chris and the Devonport 4x4 Club.
I've got some video and photos that I'll try and put up over the next few days - stay tuned....

Kevin's tour of Melbourne Part 2jawaproThu 24/11/2011 11:05 PM
It’s like something out of a nightmare!
Rob’s training course is in a Mac lab! Can you imagine how sleazy that makes him feel? The Macs are only being used to RDP into a Windows box to do that actual work - but it still has a stupid little keyboard with missing buttons and a buttonless mouse which is supposed to join the experience of using a mouse and a touch-screen on a phone, and achieves something less than both. As a mouse it sucks, and as a touch-pad it sucks.
Anyway - apart from the Macs, the training course is going quite well.
Oh yeah, these remind me - Rob and I almost missed the plane on the way over. We arrived in the airport in time to hear the boarding call for our flight. There was no one to check our bags in - so we had to find someone to check us in - and they did a special run to get our bags out to the plane. Gotta love small airports!
This weird thing looks like a reject from an old episode of Dr Who, but it’s actually supposedly a Theremin. Real Theremins are an awesome and somewhat steampunkish music instrument, but this appears to be a fake one that uses a video camera and software. Still - it’s fun to hear it make noises at people as they walk past - and occasionaly someone will do a ‘dance’ to see what they can make it do.
On the other hand, I have no idea what this thing is. Looks like a distant cousin of Deep Thought.
Melbourne is getting ready for Christmas - setting up a forest of Christmas trees with a crane. That’s better than New Zealand, where they erect Christmas Trees by crashing a helicopter.
Turns out that there was a new Mario and Zelda game released last night - EB had a launch party. If only it was for a decent game…
While in Melbourne, I just had to visit Captain Jack to pay my respects.
And it’s against the Nerd Law to visit Melbourne without going to Minotaur. It’s also almost impossible to visit Minotaur without buying stuff - but that’s a different thing…
And this is Potts. Mr Potts is a very important bear. You see, Rob’s cousin Gabi has just had surgery on her spine to try and straighten it out. She’s recovering in hospital in Melbourne, so Rob went to visit her a couple of times. Gabi was knocked out for the surgery, but Potts here was on hand to make sure nothing went wrong. He saw the whole thing. As I said, he’s a very important bear.
Anyway - my dinner has arrived.
Cop you later!

Kevin's tour of MelbournejawaproTue 22/11/2011 06:55 PM
G’day, my name’s Kevin.
Rob’s
in Melbourne for a training course and is quite busy - so I thought I’d
tag along and let you know what’s going on to save him the effort. This
is the hotel we’re staying in. It’s called the Bayview - but you only
get a view from the very top. You can see water though - so they arent really lying.
I
thought this was amusing - you can’t take the elevator all the way to
the exercise room - you have to get out and take the stairs. I guess if
you can’t manage the stairs - you won’t survive the exercise room
either, so it’s fair enough.
The exercise room is the perfect place to go for a midnight swim! Rob says the pool is a bit small - but seems plenty
big enough for me.
Melbourne’s
got a Bike Swap program so you can hire a bike and drop it off
somewhere else. You need your own helmet though, so it’s a good thing I
brought mine. Now if I could just reach the pedals...
Rob
may be busy studying - but I figured that’s no reason I can’t eat well.
The Beef Vinadloo is a sort of curry thing - and for some reason it’s
served with yoghurt, and here was me thinking that was for dessert...
I’ve
been making good use of the mini-bar when Rob hasn’t been looking. Not
cheap though - can you believe they are charging $5 for a cherry ripe!
Don’t even ask how much the grog costs...
Cop you later!
- Kevin

A Sign of Things to ComejawaproMon 21/11/2011 08:23 PM
Check this out!
Hopefully it's a sign of things to come - both the fact that I hope to get some ARB gear before too long - and the fact that it's going to live on the wall of my shed - which is still in the planning process. So hopefully it heralds both the shed and the ARB gear. In the mean time, it's just a plain awesome sign...

HummVee LetterboxjawaproTue 15/11/2011 07:33 PM
The little red 4x4 that lived on my letterbox for a while got stolen - but I’ve finally replaced it with a little blue Hummer I found at a market.
Wonder if he will last longer? He’s attached far better - but someone may steal the whole letterbox now - stay tuned….
