Up the Gog...

Just over a year ago, I was camping out near the Gog, and we cleared the track up to the summit.

Now that Oscar was back together again, I decide it was time to revisit the Gog again (I like it up here and have been back a few times).

A nice easy run up to the summit (technically the ‘Fire Tower’ location, the Summit is further along and surrounded by trees.

The old Fire Tower has been long since removed - but there’s still a trig point to announce that you’ve made it.

From here you can see all the way to the coast - pretty awesome view.

So I decided I’d have a look at the track from here to the Tarns (small mountain lakes). I’d walked the track last time as there were too many trees over the road. Well - someone has cleared most of it - so I was able to drive a lot further.

That was until I lost traction on this uphill section. Forwards or backwards - I was sliding sideways and that wasn’t good. So it was time to break out the trusty hand winch and pull Oscar up the hill.

On further investigation, it appears I was only in Two Wheel Drive. All the indicators said I was in Four, but only the rears seemed to be spinning. It’s obviously something I screwed up when I put Oscar back together - the front hubs aren’t’ engaging.

So sadly I turned around and abandoned my assault on the lakes. I’ll be back again - and with a working car hopefully.

Still - it was an awesome afternoon. It’s amazing how much fun you can have achieving nothing!

Stealth Gear

Ok - old news, but I havent blogged it yet.

After the temporary death of the Rodeo, Chris needed a new car. Somehow how found this Excel and convinced the owner to sell it for $300!

Now it's only an Excel, and it's been repainted by someone who is obviously not a professional - but for $300 it's a bargain! The engine and everything seems to be in great condition.

If my car died - I'd be highly impressed to get something this good for this price so quickly.

I've paid more for vehicles that don't go and are full of rust!

Anyway - the only problems with the Excel is a lack of power steering (which is giving Chris a workout as he's not used to that - my first car didn't have Power Steering and was fine) and the fact that it's only a four-speed.

My first car was a four-speed too, and it really wanted an extra gear when you got up to 100km/h.

We took Chris's car for a shakedown cruise the day he got it - all the way to Burnie and back. It'd do 110km/h in fourth - but could have done with an extra gear.

As we approached Burnie, Chris was messing around and saying how a 5th would be nice, and pretended to put it into fifth.

The gear lever slotted in!

Chris looked shocked, pulled his foot off the clutch - and sure enough - there's a fifth gear!

It's got the knob from a 4-speed so we assumed it only had 4 gears.

Chris's Excel has a stealth gear!

We laughed all the way back from Burnie.

Oscar Update

The bearing kit arrived from Mitsubishi during the week - so on Saturday it was time to put it back together!

That’s a nice new bearing ready to roll - looks far better than what we pulled out of there.

 Image

Chris brought home a large socket to use to bash the bearing in - with my fancy new hammer.  Almost as awesome as Thor’s.

Half assembled. Next we pushed the shaft in and then realised I’d used the wrong bolts so had to pry it back out using my epic crowbar and try again.

But finally the shaft was installed and Oscar was back on all his wheels again - feels so good to have a working 4x4 again!

Sometimes you’re the monster,
Sometimes you’re the city.
