I can still remember years ago when my mate Tommy was telling me about this awesome new show he'd seen on the net with survivors of a plane crash trapped on a tropical island with polar bears and things.
It wasn’t until a few months later that I saw the first episode myself. And I was hooked.
I still think the first 3 or 4 episodes of LOST were some of the best TV of the decade.
Thus began a ritual of LOST nights. We'd save up between 4 and 6 episodes, get together, and watch them one after the other. Heaps of fun - but after the second season people gave up on the show, life got busy, and people moved away. Thus ended the LOST nights.
And as of Sunday in the states - LOST has also ended.
As much as I'd have liked to get Trojen, Slim Jim, Steelman, Vegi, Mel, Nifen, and everyone back together for the final - we don't all live in the same place anymore, and as they gave up 3 or 4 seasons ago, it wouldn't have been the same. No collective gasps as a secret was finally revealed - just a lot of confusion from people who hadn't kept up.
So instead, my sister came up from Hobart and we had a small scale LOST night. 4 episodes in a row + pizza. Thanks Loopy!
As for the final itself - I can't say it was the most satisfying piece of TV I've ever seen - but I never expected it to be. There was no way to end the show that'd do it justice after such a long and detailed run.
It was good to see most of the main characters again - even those who we haven’t seen since the first season.
Theories will still abound - but it's nice to see a show like this end the way the creators wanted.
So to JJ Abrams and all the creators and actors - I say thanks for the memories, and I'll see you in another life, brother!

Been waiting for these guys.
Got a phone call from Toyworld yesterday morning to say they were finally in stock, and would hold them out the back until I came in and had first dibs (nice people at Toyworld).
For those who don't know - these minifigs are what Lego calls 'collectable minifigs'. They come in sealed packets and you don't know which ones you'll get.
Well - I don't like the sound of that - so I found the list of barcodes on the net. Each fig has 2 barcodes - one is the barcode for 'collectable minifig' and is the same on all of them. The second barcode is unique and does not have a number, just the barcode. This means it's jolly hard to tell them apart.
That's where my secret weapon comes in - a barcode scanner!
So I rocked over to Toyworld armed with a barcode scanner and a list of barcodes from the net ready to start hunting through the box until I had one of everything - but I hadn't counted on Richie...
One of the new blokes from work, Richie, is also into Lego and decided to come along. That was fine - but what I didn't expect was that he'd decide to buy the entire box! That's 60 minifigs!
He talked them into a decent discount, and said he'd sell me a set at the discounted rate. So with an entire box to search through at our leisure, we headed back over the river.
The scanner worked perfectly - so we proceeded to label every single packet in the box with it's contents. We had 3 full sets (1 for me, 1 for Richie, and a spare) plus a heap of extras.
So my advice? If you're going to try and collect the entire set, take a barcode scanner if you can - and better yet, take a Richie!

I have just located my walking stick!
It went missing a few weeks ago - and I was starting to think it’d vanished on a 4x4 trip and I’d never see it again (which would no doubt please my sister who hates it).
But somehow it’d made it’s way into the couch - between the frame and the pillow stuff. Not sure how it got there - but there it was.
So now, like Dr House above, I have a walking stick again. Why? Well - walking sticks are just plain cool.
In other news I’ve been stupidly busy lately. Massive project at work - was working last weekend and worked an 11 and a half hour day this week - but compared to some of the other guys at work, that’s peanuts. At lot of sleep deprived people at work. On a possibly related note - work has installed some fancy coffee machines in the tea rooms - which would be cool if you liked coffee. I drink it occasionally to stay awake, but I can’t tell the difference between instant and grind it yourself varieties. Apparently it’s massive though.
Went out to North West Offroad with Jason this morning to price some gear for his Patrol. Similar position to me - he’s got some bills to pay and then he’s saving up for his truck. As well as a mass of bills (why does everything come at once?) I’ve got to get some new tyres for the Subaru. Once done, I can start saving up for some lockers, or a lift, or a rack, or some of the hundred other awesome stuff I want.
When work sent me to Melbourne on the weekend I had the stupid idea that I’d save some money because work would pay for my meals. That worked - but Melbourne has Minotaur and I had some free time. Stupid plan of mine - doomed to fail from the get-go.
Also amongst everything else - I went to see Robin Hood this week. Jolly awesome movie if you ask me. Some people say it was a little scattered and disjointed and I can see where they are coming from - but it’s still the best Robin Hood movie I’ve seen.
So that’s it for now - I haven’t died - just been too busy to post for a while.

It’s my birthday in a couple of weeks, and I got my first present yesterday. My sister said I needed it early so I could plan for it and make a decision.
Wasn’t quite sure what to make of that, but lo and behold - I got 2 tickets to the Lisa Mitchell concert in Launceston at the end of the month!
As embarrassing as it is to admit that anything good could come out of Australian Idol, I’m a big fan of Lisa Mitchell’s music. But the problem is, I’m not sure any of my friends are - so who should I take?
I could take my sister (who gave me the tickets) - but she’s not overly excited by it either. So any of you readers out there actually a closet Lisa Mitchell fan?

The West Coast of Tassie is a beautiful place - and has great memories for me.
It is also known as one of Tassie’s best 4x4 destinations. Unfortunately the National Parks people are talking about closing a lot of the tracks down.
A committee was formed to investigate the matter, and document all the tracks and the situation. These guys were called the Off-Road Vehicle Consultative Group and did a great job. It included members of the Aboriginal community, the local councils, National Parks reps, and representatives from local 4x4 clubs.
These guys created a number of recommendations about closing some tracks that were endangering either the environment or Aboriginal sites etc, while still allowing people to access and enjoy the area.
Sadly National Parks have issued their own suggestions, which includes closing off a number of tracks that the ORVCG recommended leaving open.
I agree that the area needs to be managed and protected - which is why I support the ORVCG report, but the Parks and Wildlife Service are taking the knee-jerk reaction of closing as much of it off as they can get away with.
However, if keeping the West Coast open is important to you - you can still send letters in to voice your objection, and your support for the ORVCG recommendations. Originally the deadline was last week, but they have now extended it until Jun 4th.
