Bishopsbourne LANjawaproMon 25/05/2009 09:15 PM
MartianLeader and his band of cohorts (mostly his brothers) hosted another LAN this weekend. As always - it was a blast of fun.
More Savage - can't get enough of that game. Almost got clobbered - but while the Beasts were attacking our base, I left my post as commander, grabbed a catapult and a pulse rifle, and managed to destroy their base while they weren't looking. Mark one up for the Humans!
I even managed to talk the others into playing some DOTA. Hopefully we'll play more of that next time.
So thanks to MartianLeader, Mr_Rod_Rules, Mr_Trojan, OrangeKnight, Elite_Lt_Chase, Sabre, Buckethead, Raiders_Of_Days, Laptop_Larry, and whoever else was there. It was a great day.
And appologies to Sabre for getting him lost on the way home.

Junk Mail - Reply PaidjawaproTue 19/05/2009 08:16 PM
Don't you hate junk mail?
I don't hate all of it - some of the catalouges are quite good - but most of it is rubbish.
Last week I had two credit card companys offer me a card. I dont have and dont want a credit card. My debit card is good enough for me for now.
The good thing is that both letters came with reply-paid envelopes. So I'll return the favour and send them some junk mail.
Apparently they only pay for postage if it gets used - so I'm actually costing them by doing it. I don't know if thats true or an urban myth, but it's still fun sending worthless junk back.
One of the lucky credit card employees will receive an invitation to a Car Boot Sale from about a month ago and a couple of mothers day catalouges. The other will also get a couple of catalouges from a month ago, and a coupon for a free mobile phone which actually only arrived today (only valid if you joing a 24 month contract with a vendor I've never heard of).
If only I got more of these prepaid envelopes - I wouldn't have to throw all my old junk mail out in the recycling.

Tim's MotorkhanajawaproMon 11/05/2009 09:09 PM
I finally got around to watching Tim compete on Saturday. He was competing at a local Motorkhana here in Devonport.
A Motorkhana is a motorsport event when you have you drive a short course as fast as you can manage (normally sideways). The course is marked by flags, and you have to remember which ones you have to go around next (you get a map). It might look like everyone's drifting for the sake of it in the video - but there is actually some logic to it.
I've been meaning to get to one of Tim's hillclimbs, but this is the best I've managed so far (have to get up too early to go to a hillclimb). I was only there for a while because I had to take Jim home in time for work - but it was quite a bit of fun anyway.
Tim's car had too much grip to really slide properly, and he was down in 15th or something before I left, but he obviously managed to overcome the excess grip, and finished in 5th overall. The last run I saw him do was much better (its in the video).
And just cause I could - I put some clips together into a short video.

Tim's in the white Evo.
Well done Tim - hopefuly I'll eventually make it to a hillclimb...

Star Trek - First showing....jawaproThu 07/05/2009 04:55 PM
Star Trek 11 has finally arrived!
Unfourtuantly there were no midnight showings for this one - but I was lined up for the first showing of the day, at 11:30 in the morning (I took the day off).
There are probably gaping continuity holes and things all through it - but I loved it. It was fantastic!
Syler makes a perfect Spock. It's uncanny - he seems more right than Leonard Nimoy (who turns up in the movie) - the original Spock.
And thankfully, the movie takes place in an alternative timeline - a fact they acknowledge in the story. Even so - I can't believe they blew up INSERT SPOILER 1 HERE!
More troubling, in the REAL timeline (the one the other Trek stories are set in) they blew up INSERT SPOILER 2 HERE which basically caused the whole alternative universe thing in the first place.
Can't believe they did that.
There's also s a very interesting plot device - not only do the audience knew who these characters are and who they are supposed to grow into, but other characters in the movie know it too! Makes you feel like you're sharing a secret with those characters.
So - first impressions were very positive. In fact, even before the movie started, the Transformers trailer was brilliant! But that's a tale for another post.
Three trips to the movies this week (Wolverine with Tom and co, Fast and Furious with Klutz, Star Trek with myself) and I might go and watch Star Trek again tomorrow if my mates are going. Good thing I'm part of the Cmax club now - I've scored 1 free popcorn, 1 free drink and popcorn combo, and 1 free movie ticket so far this week! Not bad...
P.S. Forgot to mention - Kirk doesnt even get the girl, INSERT SPOILER 3 HERE does. I guess it really is a different timeline.
