Bathurst - FORDs win again!

Some people call the Melbourne Cup the 'race that stops the nation' - but really, that's just an excuse for Paris Hilton wannabes to wear funny hats and pretend to be interested in horses.

Bathurst is the real race.

It's the time of the year when people who aren't interested in motorsport stop and pay attention.

And for those of us who watch motorsport anyway - it's massive!

Who cares about the footy grand final, or the olypmics, or anything else like that - Bathurst tops them all.

This year was good and clean. No rain, and no massive offs. Still enough to keep it exciting, without causing too much havoc.

And as a Ford fan - it was brilliant. Craig Lowndes has now won it for the last three years running. That's a record he now shares with legends like Peter Brock and Jim Richards. No one has won it 4 times in a row.

The triple-8 car (which is painted in almost Holden colours - blame Vodafone) did a fantastic job, and Lowndes and Whincup lead the way for most of the race.

Holden heroes Mark Skaife and Garth Tander were sitting on pole at the start - but managed to jump the start, and then stall the car, so they ended up at the rear of the field, plus having a penalty. They finished about 12th.

It's true that a Holden finished second, but it was still definatly a Ford day. In fact, in the top 10, there were only 3 Holdens.

Well done Lowndes! Can we do it again next year?

This is the first time I've been this early to an Axon LAN. It was pretty empty when I arrived. It was actually fairly small (half the people who registered didn't arrive) but it was still a heap of fun. And I was on time! That's pretty impressive for me.

We played COD4, Savage, Flatout, DC - and CNC3!

Yes, I have finally played Command and Conquer 3 multiplayer.

Klutz and I were on a team, and had to fight Yoda and Dopefish. Klutz attacked Dopefish and got whalloped. I attacked Yoda, managed to crush his base, and then moved down and finished Dopefish off. Klutz's second wave arrived in time to provide backup for my army.

As this was an official competition, after the first round, Klutz and I had to wait for the second battle, and then compete in the finals.

Unfourtuantly the other team who made it to the finals have played it a LOT - so Klutz and I got creamed - but it was still a lot of fun.

Also unfourtuanly, it was a Saturday night LAN. I hate that it's on Sat night, as I dont want to be too tired for Church on Sunday. And this was also day-light savings, so we lost yet another hour.

Klutz forgot to change his clocks, so he missed church anyway. He arrived as it finished.

Anyway - back to the LAN.

Part the way through the night, we heard a mighty CRASH!

Now, when you're at a LAN and you hear that sort of bang, the first thing you think is that someone has knocked their PC off the table. That's pretty dreadfull, as a fall like that would probably kill a machine if it was running at the time.

But it wasn't a falling PC after all.

When we arrived on the scene, it took a moment to realise what was going on. One of the LANers was lying on the floor watching a movie on his computer with his feet on his chair like a stool.

It's not that unusual a sight at a LAN - especially as it gets later in the evening.

But then we realised that the guy on the floor was still laying in part of his chair.

I didn't get my camera fast enough to get a photo of him on the floor - but he was lying right where the chair back is.

At least he had a pillow positioned strategically to soften the blow to his head.

I have often thought it would be nice to take my computer chair with me (if I hadn't filled my car with my other gear) - but maybe it's not such a good idea after all.

Top Gear Australia started last night.

Did you watch it? What did you think?

Personally I think it's not a patch on the original (which isn't suprising) but it wasn't bad.

Definatly not as lousy as I was expecting.

So what do you guys think? Does TGA have a place on TV along with the original?

Boundary Islet

Simple question for you. Which Australian state does not share any land borders with any other state?

Tasmania!

Well - you're wrong.

No state meets that description.

But hang about - Tassie is an island - of course it has no land borders.

That's the commonly held belief - but it's wrong. Officially, we do have a land border with Victoria.

Out in the middle of Bass Strait are some islands. One of them is called Boundary Islet.

As you can see from the photo - it's not much of an island. Wouldn't rank high on many people's must-see lists.

It's only six hectares, which is smaller than my parent's hobby farm - but it's somewhere I'd love to go someday. (Correction - it is slightly larger than my parents hobby farm. My parents farm is 9 acres approx, and this is 14 acres approx - I got my measurements mixed up).

Why is it such a cool destination?

Well, due to a mistake years ago drawing out the borders between Tassie and Vic (NSW at the time, before Vic branched off) both Tassie and Vic own part of this island.

This is the only place where you cross the border from Tas to Vic on foot (not counting walking around on ships).

Anyway - just thought it was cool enough to be worth sharing.

Thanks to the Einstein Factor for spilling the beans.

Time to Unleash the Force...

Well - twas a good weekend (and Monday).

I went into Launceston and picked up my copy of Force Unleashed. It's for my Xbox - as it is not comming out on PC any time soon.

Still haven't had a chance to play it yet though.

The only reason I pre-ordered it instead of just rocking up and buying it when it came out was that it came with a special figurine. When I went to pick it up, I had to fight for the figure somewhat, as they didn't think they had any left. Apparently they were supposed to warn people they were very limited - but they hadn't (in fact, I had asked if mine would be there when I picked it up, and they said yes). Eventually they managed to track one down - so I got my Storm Trooper.

Also on Saturday I went to another of the Bishopsburne LANs (AKA Martian Leader LANs). Anyother great LAN - but I forgot to take any photos - except this one of Neptune trying to stow away in my LAN crate when I was leaving.

And on Monday night I was invited out to the Coles's again for tea. Well - it's debatable wether I was invited or my Xbox - but we come as a pair, so they got me too.

Lots of fun all around.

Now I need some sleep, a day of work, and then I can finally get started on Force Unleashed. I'll let you know what I think.
