Not a good start to the week...

"Cheer up, things could be worse" they said.
So I cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse.

Monday was not a very good day.

Emma was up and we did a lot of planning for our trip. That was good. But most of the rest was bad.

When I turned on my computer, I discovered that Azureus had updated itself and turned into Vuse. I hate Vuse with a passion. That's why I spent ages hunting for a pre-Vuse installer. It kept bugging me to update, but I kept saying no. Well - someone must have said yes at some point - because it did.

That was annoying - but far worse was the face that Firefox didn't connect to the internet. Neither did my anti-virus scanner. Oddly, both Vuse and IE could.

I thought my computer must be very sick (I blamed Vuse) and figured I'd have to reinstall Windows. I told Emma that she should be able to connect to my wireless with her laptop, or if she had to - to use IE on my computer. Then I had to go to work.

Later during the day she told me that neither worked.

When I got home from work - I discovered the reason. My ADSL modem was completely dead. It wouldn't power on at all.

This is the modem I bought especially on Ebay because I wanted another one of that model. Stupid me.

So we had no internet, which made planning the trip difficult (which is why Emma was up for the day).

It also meant that my network was down - as the modem was both the center switch of the network, and the DHCP server. I was able to work around it with a seperate switch and static IPs - but it was a hassle.

Then today, I went to blog my troubles from work (during a break) but my website wasn't working!

Things really weren't going well...

I managed to borrow an ADSL modem from work (it's a spare) and have now got my connection at home going again while I find another one to buy. My website is also working at the moment (hence the post) - and my PC is letting Firefox on the net.

Things are looking somewhat better.

But I still hate Vuse!

Note: For those of you who have no idea what I'm ranting about - feel free to ignore this post.

Serves you right for using Azureus. Either way, www.oldapps.com is your friend.

I think I used www.oldversion.com - but same idea.

Azureus is heavy (java) but it does a pretty good job of managing multiple downloads. Might have to find an alternative though. Any ideas?

Personally I use uTorrent 1.6. Unofficially the later versions (ones released after uTorrent was bought out by BitTorrent) secretly report back to BitTorrent what you're downloading. Whether this is true or not I don't know, but either way, I use 1.6. It's available from www.oldapps.com and you can turn off automatic updates. The interface is pretty good as well, I'm quite happy with it. In fact, I personally find Azureus complex and confusing, but that's possibly because I haven't used it. And to be honest, there's no real excuse for it using over 1Gb RAM in an attempt to download stuff. Seriously, that's so pointless!

Hi Rob, long time no see.

Well i think the problem with your modem is too many Peer's i've had 1 Modem die from that exact reason, and another which nearly died, started to show red on the indicator meaning internal problem. I cut my seeding down a bit, lowered how many could connect and its seems to have fixed the problem. (for now)

Best thing to do is buy an old ADSL modem which can handle such things and a wireless access point. That seems to resolve most issues. The new ones are just soo shit compared to the old reliable ones.

Another thing, I finally got a job! I'm moving back to Launceston. I got a job with PK Business Advantage in Launceston, (Australia wide company)  As a Systems Engineer. They will train me to be a Senior Systems Engineer. My wage wwasn't as good as i wanted, but i did bump it up 2000 and in 6 months i should be hopefully earning over 50,000 soo i'll be happy with that.
www.pkba.com.au

Sooo i'll be moving back with my parents for a couple weeks, and then moving into my own place (once i find it) looking for possibily 2 to 3 bedroom house or appartment.  Should be good. And i'll be able to come to lans again YAY!
Oh i get my own (for real i hope this time) Company car and Company Phone, and Probably a laptop.

Joy joy joy! ive been looking Since August, And i get this interview yesturday, rocked up in jeans and a shirt, got offered the job, came in for the second interview in the afternoon at around 4ish, and discussed my wage (worked out on experience) i think i got screwed a little as i didn't get time to prepair, the intervew was meant to be today, not yesturday. And i didn't get to say all the things i knew. But anyway its an OK wage and 5 grand more then i was making in my last job, plus another 4 grand on top more in Super so thats cool hey :)

and Utorrent ROCKS! (well actually its not a U) but whatever :)
