Return of the Lego King

Ahoy there me hearties!

It's still Talk Like a Pirate Day - but I'm going to stop for a while, so I can tell you about my latest piece of news.

Remember early in the year when I posted my "A Tale they Wont Believe"? It was the Lego story that talked about King William Gates and his crusade against the Evil Lord Macintosh. Well - that story was part of a competition (http://www.itsnotcheating.com.au) and I won first prize (A Vespa scooter).

I havent actually collected the scooter yet (although I've seen it in the shop waiting) and am probably going to sell it to a mate.

But anyway - the story's not over yet.

I just got a call from a chick called Diana from Microsoft. Yes Turkeybrain and you other Linux fans, I'm getting calls from Microsoft!

Anyway - turns out the cheap office deal (that I blogged about and won the Vespa) is currently on in the States. It's called "The Ultimate Steal" over there - but they are planning on relaunching "Its not cheating" again. I'm not sure if that means the deal will be available back here - or if it's to promote the US/Canda and UK version. I think she said UK, might be wrong about that part.

Anyway - in order to promote the whole thing again - Microsoft want me to turn my "Tale They Wont Believe" into a video. They want it done in 2 weeks - so it's not going to be great stop-motion or anything like that - but I'll get something going.

Why?

Well - they said they'd give me an Xbox 360 for my effort.

I might not be a console man (I think I'll always prefer my PC) but if its free - there's no way I'd turn it down. Not as if playing with Lego is something I hate.

Anyone got any lego castle soldiers to add to my army for the epic movie?

So now I just have to rebuild my castles and start filming!

I know what I'll be doing tonight...

Well let me put it this way. If Microsoft is ripping you off, thats bad. That's what happened with Vista. But if they are giving you free stuff, its all good! I like Linux because its a legendary OS with total customisation power to the masses (I did enjoy compiling my kernel!) and its also free. Microsoft products don't offer either of these features! They cost a mint and they aren't customisable and they crash a lot with their inefficient coding. Why does Vista require around 20Gb of space to install? (My theory is the swap file, but thats a different story! And I'm getting off topic!) But my Gentoo install WITH a full portage tree (I don't have to download most of the packages I install cos the source code is already on my computer, in case you don't get what I'm talking about here) doesn't need anywhere near that space!

But this post isn't supposed to be about a Vista rant, there are other probably more suitable places for that...

Being called by Microsoft is a bit of an issue though. I hope they don't have my name on their database anywhere... They probably do though. Oh, and please note that all of my Windows installs are completely legit, I don't go around flogging their software. But calling you to do things is a little scary!

Mind you, the fact that they are actually ringing you for your help is quite good. I can't believe they still want your help! Not to be offencive here, but they are one HUGE organisation, what would they want with some old layman?! (I'm assuming they don't know about your IT degree with pretty much straight HD's) And the more free stuff you can flog off Microsoft, the better the world will be. It's not like they can't afford it!!!

Why don't you ask for a complementary copy of Vista Ultimate while your at it. The best way to get Vista is for free (assuming its all legit... In other words don't bother burning your copy, its so not worth it.) I may have bashed it above, but when it doesn't cost you a cent it makes everything go away. I'm never going to claim Linux is perfect. I keep crashing my GUI on it, which in turn takes out the whole system so even Alt+SysRq+(one at a time) REISUB doesn't work! (Wiki that) Ah blow it, if I give you a link it may work better... Assuming it won't be caned by the man in the know on top of this site. So here goes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reisub (If you didn't see anything here, please don't blame me, it isn't my fault!) (This makes me think I may have stuffed my kernel config slightly, better contact my Linux geek...)

One other thing I noticed was the over use of your name. I imagine this went to other people than yourself! It does all seem very officious, giving you tasks, completion dates and all sorts. It all seems a bit like an interview for a job you haven't been offered yet! I wonder...

And I hope you enjoy the Xbox. I wouldn't buy one, but for free I will be bribed with anything! And congrats too, on the VERY successful story!
