Dr Who returns..

Not long now...

Dr Who returns in the UK this weekend with what is rumored to be an extremely awesome Dalek episode.

In addition - ABC is planning to put the show on iView BEFORE it airs in Australia.

In an attempt to combat piracy, they are making it possible to watch the show legally pretty much as soon as it airs in the UK. The downloaders have been watching it that fast anyway - but now everyone else can do the same.

Chalk one up for the pirates - they are forcing the TV stations to improve their offerings.

The new episode should be available from tomorrow.

Lego Tabernacle

For the last couple of months, my Pastor has been engaging the young guys from church with a study of the Tabernacle. As a way to grab their interest, he decided to combine the study with Lego. After-church discussions among the young guys (and some not-quite-so young guys) often revolve around Lego anyway - so it was a good fit.

Known as the Tabernacle of Moses, the Tabernacle was basically a large tent that was where the Children of Israel worshiped Jehovah (God) during their time in the wilderness. During the studies we looked into various aspects of the Tabernacle and how they can point us to Christ.

And of course - we built with Lego!

We all chose something to build and built it from our own Lego - and eventually brought it all together to display.

Although considerably older than the guys the study was aimed at - everyone knows I love Lego, so I was involved from the get-go.

My contribution was the overall model of the Tabernacle. Due to the fact that I have a job and could afford to order in extra Lego, mine was more colour-coordinated than some of the other models - but I must say, I was very impressed with the overall collection. Some very talented young builders in my Church.

My Tabernacle will be on display next month at Brixhibition in Hobart as well.

Sexist Lego?

When the "Lego Friends" sets were first announced, Lego got into hot water with a lot of feminists saying they were being ‘sexist’ by making such obviously girly Lego (the feminists claimed it was condesending to say that girls didn't like normal Lego). It was slightly odd that by making toys aimed at girls, they were apparently being more sexist than if they didn’t. From Lego’s point of view, they just want to break into the girl’s toy market. Their previous attempts haven’t really worked - and to be honest, Friends is probably their best attempt to date.

From an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego) perspective, Friends introduced a range of new colours that we can use - which is always good. The figs aren’t minifigs - but the rest is compatible with regular Lego.

But that’s all old news these days.

The thing that surprised me this week was the Australian Lego Club’s magazine.

On Monday I received 4 magazines. One for myself, one for Neptune the cat, one for Oscar the Pajero, and one for Rothgar the G60 ute. When  Myer has sales you can get free club memberships if you spend over a certain amount - and I didn’t want to waste them, so I signed up my cat and cars.

The thing that seemed odd was that Glados (my pinkish G60) should have received a magazine too - but she didn’t. Well, hers turned up a day later. And unlike the other magazines, hers came with a small Lego Friends set included!

I can only assume it’s because Glados was registered as a girl while the rest are blokes.

In this issue of the Magazine, it appears that girls get free Lego, and boys don’t. Imagine if you have two young kids - I imagine the brother would be very jealous if his sister got free Lego when he didn’t.

It’s possible that later on the guys will get their turn - but for now it seems that the Lego club is being a little sexist. Girls get girly Lego - guys don’t get anything.

The Lego set that never existed!

Behold - set 6862 The Secret Space Voyager.

Ok - calling it the set that never existed might be a stretch, but it was never sold.

It’s actually a somewhat ugly mid-sized spaceship. It just happens to be really rare.

You couldn’t walk into a shop to buy this set - you had to send away for the instructions. I’ve sourced a clipping from a comic book back in the day that has the mail order instructions.

In order to claim the instructions you had to send a barcode from one of three other M:Tron sets. Using the parts from those three sets you could build this model.

So you needed sets 6923 Particle Ionizer, 6877 Vector Dector, and 6896 Celestial Forager. Using those parts and the instructions, you could build this set.

It’s an official part of the M:Tron line - but it was never sold itself. To make it even rarer down here, the instructions were not available in Australia.

While I do have the three sets required, I have a separate model of this set too - to complete my M:Tron theme.

In case you were wondering why the ship had wheels (I was until I got it), it’s carrying a little buggy (with a third spaceman). The buggy is held in place by magnets which work surprisingly well.

Lego claims this set will "Blow your Magnets off!" which is a little ambitions - but it completes the M:Tron theme for me - so I’m very happy to finally have it.

Night Run

I went for my first Night Run with the club on Saturday. We had about 15 trucks and headed bush about 8pm and got back around 3am. It was pretty epic.

We broke a Landy and a F-Truck, but overall it was a good night. A few people were disapointed that it wasn't more extreme - and a few were worried that it was more extreme than they'd expected.

As Oscar's power steering has given up the ghost - I managed to score a seat with the awesome Trout for the night. So I didn't even have to risk breaking my own truck!

Don't Doubt the Trout!

Don't worry buddy - Trout'll tow you out...
