I stumbled across a picture of the Vanguard (pictured) in a Lego Journal magazine I stumbed acorss in a comic store while looking for a StarGate magazine.
Lots of stumbling lately.
Anyway - after looking at the PCS ships (that stands for Pre Classic Space - means they are set before the original Lego 'classic' Space sets) and the other amazing models that AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) have built, I'm feeling somewhat inspired.
The other good thing is that I think I've finally worked out what I enjoy so much about lego and models in general (including trains etc). It's not actually the finished product, or even the actual building process. It's creating a 'plausible' world.
If I were to build a spaceship, say, I'd have to make sure it was plausible. Not from a realistic technical point of view, but from the point of view of the people who would be living in it if it were real.
So I'd need to make sure I had enough crew that they could take 'swings' and some could be on duty while others slept etc. I'd also need the ship to have enough beds, recreational faclities, toilets, etc to cater for the size of the crew.
That's the sort of thing that I find really enjoyable - building a world for fictional characters to live in. The same goes for my model trains. It's not running the trains that is the exciting thing - it's creating the world for them to operate in.
The good thing about knowing this is that it gives me some assitance in choosing a good project. Much as I love my model trains, I'd probably get more enjoyment building a serious model with lego. It's probably even slightly cheaper and takes up less room when finished.
And if I don't want to make a spaceship, I could always choose something a little closer to home:
